We are pleased to feature the work of a young poet known by the name of Athia. Based in the UK and a British born Pakistani, her poem is based on the taboo surrounding rape and sexual assault in the South Asian culture women face and how cultural values have come to shape and shun the discussions surrounding these sensitive matters.

one of the saddest moments
I have experienced
was realising
that culture made it difficult
for the brown girl to say
he touched me
he assaulted me
he raped me
because she knew
in their eyes
you and blame
would fit perfectly together

– silence

Athia is currently studying counselling and is passionate about mental health, where she spends her time volunteering. Alongside volunteering with charity work, she has a huge passion for reading and writing.
